Whitsun procession with draft horses in the Bavarian Forest

Whitsun procession with draft horses in the Bavarian Forest

This photograph by Hans-Jürgen Burkard depicts the deeply rooted, conservative, rural Catholicism of this region. The Whitsun Ride to Kötzting is one of the largest mounted penitential processions in Europe and dates back to a vow made in 1412. It is accompanied by hundreds of draft horses, and the order is strictly organized: at the head of the procession rides the cross-bearer, followed by a Roman cardinal and local priests, and then the flag bearers. The holy procession takes place annually in the Bavarian Forest. The image is particularly striking due to the photographic composition of the expressive horse's head and the traditional cross-bearer against a white and blue Bavarian sky, Bad Kötzting, Bavaria, 2016.
